Let me introduce my family’s restaurant.
Asahi Menruiten — the Asahi Noodle Shop — is a small shokudo in Moriyama, Shiga, run by my mother and father, the two of them, by themselves. It sits in a quiet residential neighbourhood about a ten-minute walk from JR Moriyama Station, one street back from the main road.
I should say up front that I am not a neutral party here. But let me introduce it anyway, because I think it’s a good place.
Inside there are ten seats — two tables for four, and a small raised tatami platform for two, worn smooth by decades of people sitting on it. It’s a Showa-era diner that simply never got around to modernising. It feels less like a restaurant than like being invited into someone’s dining room, which is more or less what it is.
What to order
Almost everything is ¥600–700, which in 2026 is its own kind of remarkable.

Chuka soba — ¥600. The one people come for. A light chicken-and-soy broth, chashu pork, menma, naruto, and a generous pile of bean sprouts. Nothing clever about it. I’ve eaten it my whole life and I’m not tired of it.
Kinugasa-don. A regional dish from Shiga and Kyoto: strips of fried tofu and Kujo green onion simmered in dashi, then bound with a soft layer of egg over rice. Gentle, in the way food is gentle when someone’s mother makes it.
Tanin-don — ¥600. Literally “stranger bowl” — beef and onion with egg over rice, a Kansai classic. The regulars’ pick.
Also on the menu: fried rice (¥600), tendon (¥700), oyakodon, tori-namba, and cold Chinese noodles in summer.
We still deliver, in a wooden box

We do local delivery — demae — and it still goes out in an okamochi, the traditional wooden carrying box, with “旭” on the side. Hot bowls carried to the door the way it was done decades ago. You almost never see this any more.
Call ahead for the delivery area: +81-77-582-5012.
A few things to know before you come
It’s a small shop run by two people, so a few notes so your visit goes well.
Lunch only, 11:00–14:00. There is no dinner service. Closed Wednesdays.
Entirely non-smoking. “Showa-era diner” makes some people picture a room full of cigarette smoke. Not here — you get the old atmosphere and clean air at the same time.
Cash only. No cards, no e-money. Please bring yen.
Ten seats. At the peak of lunch you may have to wait a little.
Getting there
On foot: about ten minutes (roughly 500 m) from the east exit of JR Moriyama Station on the Biwako Line.
By car: there are a few spaces beside the shop. The surrounding lanes are narrow residential streets, so please go slowly and watch for pedestrians. Large vehicles aren’t recommended.
Finding it: look for the green-tiled threshold, the navy noren with the white “旭”, and the old sliding door. It appears quietly out of a residential street.

If you come
If you’d like to taste what people here have been eating for decades — and see a part of Japan that sits well off the tourist trail — we’d be glad to have you.
Time moves slowly in there. Every bowl comes with the quiet kind of hospitality, straight from my parents’ kitchen.
