🚶 On the ground

Rishiri. It’s beautiful either way.

A walk between the sea and the mountain, and the road back to Sapporo

Years ago, I went to Rebun Island on my own.
I love hiking. And walking somewhere with both the sea and the mountains around you? That’s pretty hard to beat.

Mt. Rishiri across the water, on an earlier trip.
Mt. Rishiri across the water, on an earlier trip.

I was looking through those old photos, and there was Mt. Rishiri, looking beautiful across the water.
Hang on. I’d never actually been over there.
Maybe it was time.

So this time, I came to Rishiri with friends.
The last story ended on the morning ferry from Wakkanai. Here’s what happened after we got off.

Feeling at home already

We rented a car from Kameya. They brought it right to our hotel, and the woman who helped us was so friendly from the start.
If you’re renting a car on Rishiri, they’d be my pick. I was already thinking, “We’ll be back!”

She kept telling us about this ramen place.
Three times. Seriously.
“Well, shall we give it a go?”
That was about our level of excitement at first.

A stop at Reiho Spring.
A stop at Reiho Spring.
Sea and mountain. The kind of view that makes you pull over.
Sea and mountain. The kind of view that makes you pull over.

How is this ramen hiding out here?

The place was Rishiri Ramen Miraku.
After all those recommendations, we got there ten minutes before opening. And there was already a queue. We could’ve been in Tokyo.
Luckily, we got in with the first group. I heard later that in the busy season, people sometimes wait three hours.

Miraku, the ramen shop Kameya kept recommending.
Miraku, the ramen shop Kameya kept recommending.

I ordered the shio ramen, the salt-based one.
And honestly? It blew me away.

Shio ramen. So much umami.
Shio ramen. So much umami.

I’d pictured a simple little country ramen shop. That was my own assumption, and wow, was I wrong.
This was the real deal.
How are you making ramen like THIS, all the way out here?!

It tasted like all the flavor of Rishiri kombu had gone into that bowl.
Just umami, everywhere. And Nishiyama noodles, too. Of course it was good.
We were sitting there going, “Wait. What IS this?!”

Kameya was only about a three-minute walk away.
Of course we went back and told them how good it was. Now I understood why she’d brought it up three times.

“Pond” really doesn’t prepare you for this

Otatomari Pond and Himenuma Pond.
Such ordinary names. I hadn’t imagined anything this beautiful, or this quiet.

Otatomari Pond, with Mt. Rishiri rising beyond it.
Otatomari Pond, with Mt. Rishiri rising beyond it.

Mt. Rishiri rose beyond the water, so grand it took my breath away.
For a while, I just couldn’t move.

Walking the boardwalk at Himenuma.
Walking the boardwalk at Himenuma.
Another quiet moment at Himenuma.
Another quiet moment at Himenuma.

My friends went quiet, too.
“So places this beautiful really do exist.”
Nobody actually said it. But that was the feeling.

This time, looking back toward Rebun

From Yuhigaoka lookout, I could see Rebun across the sea.
Years ago, I’d stood on that island looking at Rishiri. Now I was looking the other way.
Rebun was beautiful, too.

The sea from Yuhigaoka lookout.
The sea from Yuhigaoka lookout.

I suppose you come up here to look at the islands and the mountain.
But I found myself wondering something else.
What made people decide to come and live here?

A peaceful bath every day

An older man started chatting with me in the hotel bath.
It turned out he’d been born in Sakhalin.

“I don’t like cities. Here on this quiet island, I can have a peaceful bath every day. I’m happy.”
That was what he told me.

At the time, I just thought, yeah, that sounds pretty good.
His words came back to me later, after I’d returned to Sapporo.

Just watching the sun go down

Hotel Rishiri, where we stayed, has a viewing deck.
I went out to cool off after my bath, and happened to catch this.

Out on the deck after a bath, just in time for this sunset.
Out on the deck after a bath, just in time for this sunset.

What did I do?
Nothing, of course.
Just watched the sunset. What a luxury.

Clouds were covering the mountaintop.
Of course you’d like to see the whole mountain, right up to the summit. Who wouldn’t?
But life doesn’t go exactly the way you want all that often, does it?

I’d made it here.
I was looking at this beautiful sunset, with all this nature around me.
That was more than enough.
I really felt that.

This calls for sake

That evening, we headed to Furusato Shokudo.
On the way, we passed Kameya just as they were closing up. There was a cute baby being carried home.

“Furusato Shokudo is really good! Come back and see us!”
We’d only rented a car that morning, and now we were getting a friendly send-off on our way to dinner.
Little things like that make you happy.

Furusato Shokudo at night.
Furusato Shokudo at night.

At the restaurant, we ordered hokke chan-chan yaki: Atka mackerel cooked on a hot plate with miso.
I’d never tasted anything like it.
What on earth?!

Hokke chan-chan yaki, with that gentle miso flavor.
Hokke chan-chan yaki, with that gentle miso flavor.

That gentle miso flavor.
Oh, this calls for sake.

The chan-chan yaki was so good that we ended up ordering the grilled split hokke as well.
“Oh! That’s DEFINITELY going to be good too!”
We couldn’t help ourselves.

We couldn’t resist ordering the grilled hokke, too.
We couldn’t resist ordering the grilled hokke, too.

Plump, juicy fish. So much juice!
We finished it without even touching the soy sauce.

Didn’t we just see you?

After dinner, I went to the convenience store for some miso soup to help me sober up.
The woman at the counter said, “If you’re having soup, I can give you a cup!”
Wait, really?
Such a small thing, but I wasn’t expecting someone at a convenience store to look after me like that.

Then the owner of the restaurant walked in.
“Oh! You again!”
I ran into the man from the bath again, too.

People on Rishiri were so kind.
It was a funny feeling. People I didn’t know somehow started to feel like family.
And you kept bumping into the same faces.

Mind you, would I feel the same if I lived here? Hmm. Haha.
Maybe part of the fun of everyone being so close is that I’m just visiting.

Because it’s beautiful. That’s all.

And then, of course, the next day was perfectly clear.

Mt. Rishiri from the ferry back.
Mt. Rishiri from the ferry back.

One of my friends said,
“Ah, if only it had been like this yesterday.”
“Yeah, I know. What a shame,” I said.

But inside, I was thinking, it’s beautiful either way.
Yesterday with the clouds, today with the sunshine. Both are the real Rishiri.
It’s still the same island.
And it’s beautiful. That’s all.

My friends had simply come along with my plan for this trip.
But on the ferry back, they were already saying,
“So, what month are we coming next year?”

Wait. We are? Haha.
“All right, then you can bring ME next time!”

One more surprise on the road

My friends had flights to catch, so once we were back on the mainland, our only stop was for a zangi fried-chicken bento.
But honestly, I could look at the Hokkaido countryside for hours and never get bored.

We searched for zangi on the way. One photo looked so juicy that I was sold.
Karaage Kitchen Yanoya, in Nayoro.

A big serving of zangi. So, so juicy!
I didn’t know fried chicken could taste like this.

You could really taste the chicken, and it was cooked just right.
I’m actually not great with greasy food. But this? I finished the lot.
It didn’t leave me feeling heavy at all. How do they do that?

I picked up a business card and told them, “I’ll write about you on my blog!”
If you’re passing through Nayoro, keep this place in mind.

Where did all these people come from?!

That was my reaction when I got back to Sapporo.
Compared with Tokyo or Osaka, Sapporo isn’t even especially crowded.
But after Rishiri? Wow. So many people.

Back in Sapporo for the evening.
Back in Sapporo for the evening.

And then I remembered the man in the bath.
A quiet island. A peaceful bath every day. Being happy with that.
Now I really understood what he meant.

We gain all this convenience, but give something up along the way, don’t we?
Then again, look at the kind of blog I write. Maybe that should’ve told me I’m not much of a city person! Haha.

Still, Sapporo has this place

The next day, I went to Rukku & Uohei for lunch. My second visit.
This place is something else. A thousand yen is enough to fill you up with fish.

A sashimi set with coffee. It was 800 yen.
A sashimi set with coffee. It was 800 yen.

I treated myself to the sashimi set. Coffee included!
And it was 800 yen.
Sorry, WHAT?

Come here after looking around Nijo Market and your sense of prices just breaks. Haha.
I spend so much time in America that a place like this feels like a dream.
I’d love you to try it, too.

If life’s wearing you out, try a trip to the countryside

This was early October, outside the busy season.
A little walk between the sea and the mountains. A chat with someone local. Good food and a bath.
This is the kind of trip I’d recommend.

Even if the sky doesn’t clear when you want it to. Even if you don’t get through everything on your list.
You made it here. You’re looking at this view.
That’s more than enough.

If life’s wearing you out, try a trip to the countryside.
The things we put so much value on in the city don’t mean a thing out here, in front of all this nature.

Our little trip map

Watercolor sketch of stops around Rishiri and the return journey via Wakkanai and Nayoro to Sapporo
A little trip sketch, not a navigation map. The dotted lines show the places we visited, not every road or stretch we retraced. Rebun is a memory from an earlier trip; we didn’t visit it this time.
  1. Our base: Hotel Rishiri in Kutsugata.
Kameya brought the rental car to the hotel, and off we went.
  2. The spring, the coast, and Miraku.
Reiho Spring and the southern coast appear in our photos before our shio ramen lunch at Miraku.
  3. Otatomari Pond and Shiroi Koibito Hill → Himenuma → Yuhigaoka lookout.
The mountain beyond the ponds, and Rebun across the sea.
  4. A bath, the sunset deck, and dinner.
Back to the hotel, then out to Furusato Shokudo.
  5. The ferry to Wakkanai, then a stop in Nayoro.
Back on the mainland, we drove south and stopped at Karaage Kitchen Yanoya for zangi.
  6. Sapporo, and Rukku & Uohei the next day.
An 800-yen sashimi set with coffee. Still can’t quite believe it.

This itinerary follows our photos and memories. The map simplifies the roads and leaves out the details of any backtracking.

What our night on Rishiri cost

For reference, here’s the cost per person, splitting the hotel and car equally between three friends. The return ferry, one night on Rishiri, and the island rental car came to about ¥16,500 each. This isn’t the total cost of the whole trip; meals and other spending are extra.

What we usedPer person
Return ferry: Wakkanai–Rishiri¥7,180
One night at Hotel Rishiri
Including accommodation and bathing taxes, after using points
¥6,685
Kameya rental car
Our ¥8,000 car bill, divided by three
About ¥2,667
Total for these three itemsAbout ¥16,532

Before using hotel points, the room and taxes worked out to ¥7,400 per person. Without those points, these three items would have come to about ¥17,247 each at our booking rates. These are our actual off-season costs in early October 2026, not a quote for a future booking.

The return ferry also appears in the previous story’s cost table. If you’re adding the two stories together, only count it once.

Renting from Kameya

The terms we were given were ¥7,000 for three hours, then ¥1,000 for each extra hour, including tax and fuel. They brought the car to the hotel, too. Our actual bill for the car was ¥8,000.

That evening, we passed them as they were closing up, with a baby being carried home. “Furusato Shokudo is really good! Come back and see us!”
Yes, we’d happily rent from them again.

Those were the terms for our visit. Check the current price, fuel policy and delivery arrangements when you book.

The mainland car, and lunch in Sapporo

For referenceWhat we paid
Mainland rental car: full booking¥18,000 per car
Mainland fuel: two fills¥9,455 total
Car and fuel split three waysAbout ¥9,152 each
Sashimi set at Rukku & Uohei
Including coffee, on this visit
¥800

The mainland car and fuel cover both the journey north and the return, not just this part of the trip. The car rental also appears in the previous story. Meals at Miraku, Furusato Shokudo and Yanoya, other food and drink, flights, Sapporo accommodation, tolls and souvenirs aren’t included in the subtotal above. Opening days, transport schedules and prices can change, so check before you go.
