“Let’s go somewhere for a barbecue and a hike.” How about Rishiri, then? I used to go to Wakkanai, Rishiri and Rebun all the time. I love hiking. A walk up a mountain, then a coffee at the top. That’s my idea of luxury! I’d just managed to buy some matsutake mushrooms in Vancouver, so I asked a few friends, “Fancy a barbecue?” I love how easily everyone says yes to a trip. We stayed in Chitose the night before, at Hotel Grand Terrace Chitose. It’s an older place, but the service is good and the price is kind. This time, a bath, tea and alcoholic drinks were all part of the stay. Almost a waste to use it just for a night’s sleep. We rented from Car Rental Hokkaido. They’re always friendly and good value, and they came to pick us up at the hotel, too. I’d booked a smaller car, but they upgraded us again, to a big Mitsubishi. Such a comfortable ride!
Still making plans in Sunagawa
We stopped for a break in Sunagawa. That’s where we finally looked up somewhere to have our barbecue and found Agri Kobo Maabu in Fukagawa. Yep. We still hadn’t picked a place until then. We got the rest of our food at a roadside market about ten minutes from Maabu. It was busy, and they had everything: vegetables, bento lunches, meat, drinks. What a good little stop!

Our first stop at Maabu
It was our first time at Maabu. Easy to stop at along the way, with a lovely view. And when I think of Fukagawa, I think of apples. I love apples. We rented the barbecue gear there and laid out the food, including those matsutake from Vancouver. The view! The weather! The price! How easy it all was! And that day, we had the place to ourselves! Honestly, three times better than I’d imagined.

That matsutake smell!
Onto the grill went the matsutake. A little matsutake dance on the grill! That smell was unreal. Are we really allowed this much luxury? The hot spring was brilliant, too. The outdoor bath, the water, the sauna. Even the drinking water. All of it. I loved that Maabu wasn’t just about the barbecue.

Apples, and cider for later
We also stopped at the orchard next door for some tasting and apple picking. No way I was missing that. And we got cider for the evening! …A friend was driving, so I ended up having some along the way.

Along the coast to Wakkanai
Then we took the Ororon coastal road, hoping to see Rishiri. I’d never come this way before. The Sea of Japan on our left, with Rishiri out there. Fishing villages on our right. Even the slightly faded feel of the place had its own charm. I really liked it. I hadn’t seen these friends in a while, and we kept chatting. About three hours later, we were in Wakkanai. “Wait. Was Wakkanai always this close?” That evening, we went for conveyor-belt sushi at Hanaichimonme. The salmon! So good. The octopus had that lovely springy bite. And the crab soup—enough to bring a tear to your eye! Conveyor-belt sushi in a port town. Of course it’s going to be ridiculously good, right?

A morning walk and some familiar faces
A morning walk and a coffee pickup. That’s my usual routine when I’m away. We’ve got Secoma here—the local convenience store! And there were the deer, outside the station. Oh, right. These guys turn up everywhere around here. Long time no see!

And now I’m writing this on the morning ferry to Rishiri. A bit of rocking is part of the charm. The breeze feels amazing! There’s a rainbow after the rain, visible from the ferry. Surely Rishiri has some sunshine waiting for us, too! More next time!
Our little detours

An illustrated trip sketch, not to scale.
A rough idea of what we spent
Split between three of us, the recorded costs through Wakkanai came to about ¥25,200 each. Including the return ferry tickets to Rishiri that we had already bought, about ¥32,400 each.
| Item | Approx. per person |
|---|---|
| Night in Chitose, including tax | ¥3,100 |
| Hotel breakfast | ¥1,400 |
| Rental car (our full booking, split equally) | ¥6,000 |
| Matsutake, barbecue food and Maabu | ¥3,465 |
| Night in Wakkanai, including tax | ¥8,100 |
| Sushi at Hanaichimonme | ¥3,128 |
| Return ferry to Rishiri (already purchased) | ¥7,180 |
These are figures from our trip, not current prices. The car amount is our entire rental booking divided by three, not a daily rate. The yen amount for the matsutake is provisional, and some accommodation costs come from our own records. The ferry amount includes the return journey still to come.
This subtotal excludes our stay and rental car on Rishiri, fuel, tolls, flights, and extra food, drinks, apples, cider and souvenirs outside these shared records.
