Before You Become a Pilot

🇬🇧 English

People ask how to become a pilot. Often, the next question is how much it costs.

Fair enough. Before you can worry about flying, you have to work out whether you can afford to start.

My route was an ordinary national university, then the Civil Aviation College — 航空大学校. My parents run a small diner. We really didn’t have much money.

I wanted to go abroad for free. And I wanted to make life easier for my parents one day. Those were my reasons. What happened first was that I made things harder for them.

Have the money conversation first

At the academy, tuition is only part of it. These are the published figures in the 2027 admissions guide, checked on 27 September 2026. They aren’t what my family paid back then.

Item Published amount
Entrance fee ¥282,000
Tuition, all four stages ¥4,808,000
Entrance fee and tuition combined ¥5,090,000
Dormitory ¥1,500 a month

Application fees, food, utilities, uniforms, exams, medicals and moves between campuses come on top. The guide also warns about training delays: the curriculum is 24 months, but students graduating in fiscal 2025 took around three and a half years from the start of classes. You still need to live during the wait.

In my day, I couldn’t take a part-time job during training. I borrowed through a scholarship loan scheme, too. It was still hard on my parents. They never said a word. They just paid. I still feel bad about that.

So have that conversation properly. Who’s paying? Can they manage it? What happens if it takes longer? I wish I’d talked about it more.

The routes I’d look at

I tried an airline-sponsored selection, too. My English was nowhere near good enough. I didn’t pass. If I could go back and change one thing, I’d start working on that earlier.

My advice is to look at airline-sponsored training first, then the academy. Read the actual recruitment and funding terms for each route.

Self-funded training isn’t something I’d recommend. That’s my opinion, and I feel strongly about it. You can spend tens of millions of yen without knowing whether you’ll get the job afterwards. Extra training can mean extra bills. Even if you do get there, how long will it take to earn that money back? Honestly, to me it feels closer to an expensive hobby than a sensible way into a job.

If you want to fly beyond the airlines, there are other organisations to look into: the Self-Defense Forces, police, fire services and coast guard. Their recruitment and pilot-training routes differ, so joining isn’t a promise that you’ll fly. But there are people who’ve worked their way into flying that way. You’re doing useful work for people, too. That matters to me.

I thought the training would be fun

Before I started, of course I thought flying would be fun.

It really wasn’t. The syllabus was huge. Homework, then a test, then another test. And my classmates were good. I was flat out just keeping up.

I’ve written about not being able to fly straight already. But there was all the work on the ground, too. Getting to fly didn’t make the rest of it disappear.

If you love football, becoming a professional footballer still sounds like hard work, doesn’t it? Same with dancing. Enjoying something and doing it for a living aren’t quite the same experience.

I’m happy in this job. I just wouldn’t tell someone that training felt like getting to do my favourite thing all day.

Tomorrow’s share

There were nights in Obihiro when I got back to my room and cried. Past twenty years old, and there I was.

One night I turned on a local TV show. Some guy was rolling a die and being sent all over the country. He looked about my age, and things weren’t going well for him either. But he wasn’t giving up, and he was funny. I kept watching. Some of you will know the show.

It gave me something to laugh at on a bad night. That was enough for then.

Plenty of times I thought I was going to wash out. Each time, I’d think: fine, but I’ll prepare properly for tomorrow. Navigation calculations, going through procedures. Just tomorrow’s work. Thinking all the way to graduation was too much.

Then one day an instructor said I was making progress. Not that I was good. Just that I was improving. I was so happy.

After the phone call to my mother that I wrote about before, I started thinking, well, if they wash me out, they wash me out. Things gradually got a bit better. I could still work hard without treating every flight as the end of my life.

I didn’t get in the first time, either

The first time I applied to the academy, I failed the medical. The second time, I passed without a problem. Both attempts were while I was at university.

That’s my experience, though. It doesn’t mean everyone can apply again. The current admissions guide excludes people who previously failed the academy’s Medical B EEG examination. Check your eligibility with the academy before planning another attempt.

I don’t have a clever answer for someone who’s struggling. If you haven’t decided what to do, you don’t have to settle your whole future tonight. Prepare for tomorrow, watch something funny, sleep. That’s what I did.

And it would have been all right if I’d stopped. Not becoming a pilot wouldn’t have meant the rest of my life was over.

What actually mattered

Doing this job taught me that being better than the person next to you isn’t the point. The things that matter are ordinary:

  • Read the manuals and listen to what you’re taught.
  • Don’t leave things you don’t understand unresolved.
  • Ask someone when you don’t know.
  • Look after the people you’re working with.

This isn’t a competition where you get a prize for flying better than your classmate. You need to work together. Once I understood that, coming first stopped being much of a goal.

What made me happy was passing the next test. Being able to do something I couldn’t do before. Getting together with everyone before a day off.

And sleeping. Honestly, being able to go to sleep was wonderful.

What I’d tell you now

You don’t have to come first at everything.

While you’re a student, do something with your friends. A club, a team, anything where you have to work together to get somewhere. Pick a goal and have a proper go at working out how to reach it. I think teachers and people running selections are looking for those things, too.

And keep a sense of balance. About the money, about asking your family for help, about how much of yourself you put into this one job.

More than anything, I’d like you to care about being useful to someone. That’s my honest feeling about it.

If you’re wondering about this path, or having a rough time on it, you’re welcome to tell me. I don’t have an answer for everything. I can listen.
