I’ve started watching American football. Late to it — everyone else has had decades and I’m right at the beginning of it.
So: complete beginner, walking up to Levi’s Stadium.
The 49ers don’t play in San Francisco, by the way. They play down here, nowhere near it, and nobody seems to think that’s strange.

Santa Clara is a quiet place. Office parks, hotels, roads far wider than anything here needs, nobody on the pavement. You walk through all of that, and then it just lands on you.
LEVI’S in white steel up on the frame, the stands showing red through the gaps, a banner down the side reading HOME OF THE FAITHFUL.
It’s overwhelming. Too polished, too big, too well made — and completely empty on a Saturday afternoon, which somehow made it bigger. What must this be like in season? I have to come back. That’s not a maybe.
And nobody around here finds any of it remarkable. That’s the part I can’t get over.
Getting there

The light rail. VTA, white and blue, wires overhead, a platform with a yellow edge and gravel either side and nobody else waiting.

Then a boulevard so wide it stops feeling like a street. Palms and shade trees down both sides, four lanes, the stadium sitting at the end of it going red.

You walk toward it and it doesn’t get closer for a long time, and then all at once it’s over you.

A Hilton right across the junction. Palm trees, a green glass office block, traffic lights, a white sedan turning. It’s an odd corner of the world — a stadium that seats tens of thousands, dropped into what is otherwise business parks and hotels.

The tram runs straight past it on its own strip down the middle of the road. Trees, empty tarmac, hills in the far distance.

SANTA CLARA SQUARE, in enormous white letters on a red wall on the side of a car park. I took this one through a car window, which is why the reflections are in it. I’ve left them in.
The good part

On the way back, a supermarket. The wine aisle in an American supermarket is a genuinely funny thing if you’ve grown up somewhere it isn’t — a curved wooden shelf, bottles three rows deep, and red sale tags stuck on nearly every one of them.
We bought cheap California wine. Nothing clever. Whatever was on the shelf with a good number under it.

And then this, back at the hotel, in the lobby rather than anyone’s room: ribs, brisket, a mountain of fries, coleslaw, corn salad, and about nine little tubs of sauce nobody could account for. Two bottles open — a pinot noir and a cabernet, both from up the road, both about the price of a sandwich.

A pepperoni pizza turned up as well, because of course it did.
The others had been off somewhere else all day, so everybody turned up with a different afternoon to report. That’s the good version of a group trip — everyone goes their own way and you get all of it back at the end of it.
That was the evening. Loud, messy, everyone talking over everyone. Cheap wine bought in a supermarket an hour earlier, drunk out of hotel glasses in a lobby.
The World Cup was on the TV in the corner. I’d spent the afternoon looking at a stadium for one kind of football and here was the other one. What got me is how calm everyone here is about it. It’s on, people glance over, somebody says something, and that’s that. Put the same match in front of a room of Japanese people and the temperature goes up ten degrees inside a second. I’m not saying either way is better. I just noticed I was the one leaning forward.
I went out to look at a stadium and this is the part I keep thinking about.

SANTA CLARA SQUARE。
