A rare day off opened up suddenly. The weather was clear, and the mountains were calling. We packed a small camp stove, instant coffee, and a few essentials, then headed to Tarumae in Hokkaido to watch the clouds from above.
Tarumae is a modest peak, and what it lacks in height it makes up for in views. The trail winds through dense forest, with occasional glimpses of Lake Shikotsu below. By late afternoon the lake spreads out in full colour: deep blue water, forested shores, and mountains rising from the far bank. The sky was moody that day — layered clouds, patches of sun — exactly what we were hoping for.
At the summit, we set up. A small aluminium windscreen, the little stove, instant coffee, and water from a thermos. The ritual is simple: light the flame, wait for the water to heat, pour, wait some more. But sitting up there watching steam rise into cool mountain air, it tastes like something more.
These are the moments that stick — not the effort or the distance, but the stillness afterwards. The coffee. The view. The shared space with other people doing exactly the same thing.

急に休みが空いた日があってさ。天気は文句なしの快晴で、こういう日はもう山しかないなと思った。
小さいコンロと、インスタントコーヒーと、あとは最低限のものだけ持って、北海道の樽前山へ。目的は「上から雲を見る」。それだけ。
樽前山は、そんなに気合いを入れて登る山じゃない。でも、標高のわりに見えるものがすごいんだよね。
登山道はしばらく深い森の中を縫っていって、ときどき木の間から支笏湖がちらっと見える。午後も遅くなってくると、湖がまるごと色を持ちはじめる。濃い青の水面、緑に覆われた岸、向こう岸からそのまま立ち上がってる山。
その日は空がずっと機嫌の変わる感じで、雲が何層にも重なって、そのすき間から光が落ちてきてた。まさに見たかったやつ。
山頂に着いて、店開き。
アルミの風防をぐるっと立てて、持ってきた小さいコンロに火をつける。インスタントコーヒーと、魔法瓶に入れてきた水。やることは単純で、火をつけて、湯が沸くのを待って、注いで、また少し待つ。それだけ。
家でやったらただのインスタントなんだけど、この高さで、冷たい空気に湯気が立ち上っていくのを見ながら飲むと、もう別のものになってる。
あとから思い出すのって、登るのがきつかったとか、何キロ歩いたとか、そういうことじゃないんだよね。
登りきったあとの、あの静けさ。コーヒー。景色。そして、まわりで同じことをやってる人たちと、なんとなく共有してる時間。
そこが残る。
