🇬🇧 English
The other day I was walking near Vancouver airport when I started thinking about Victoria. I felt like going again.
I’ve been there before, by ferry. So here are that walk and a few photos from that earlier trip. All that blue sky and water came back to me.
Just a walk near the airport

The trees were starting to turn. There were still green leaves around, but the tall ones along the road were already brown, with yellow further down the street.
Cars, hotels, a pavement. That was where I was walking that day.
A small box at Tim Hortons

I stopped at Tim Hortons, too.

I bought an apple fritter and a ten-pack of Timbits. The box was part of the Harry Potter collaboration: dark blue, with gold drawings all over it. Quite a little box for a few doughnut bites.
I love Tim Hortons. After eating their doughnuts, the ones back home in Japan leave me wanting a little more.
And then I was thinking about Victoria

Here’s the water near the airport. A path along the edge, a railing, and the sunlight across the surface.
Somewhere during that walk, I started wanting to go to Victoria again. Last time, I took a bus from Vancouver city to Tsawwassen, then a ferry across to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island.

Across the water to Victoria. A little illustration.
These are from the earlier trip

Now for the older photos. This is Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
What I remember is how blue everything was. The sky, the sea, the lakes. Really, really blue. And those lovely buildings.
These photos are of the harbour, with boats in front and the town behind them. The water comes right into the middle of it.

That’s the Empress on the other side. People walking beside the water, others sitting near it. There are so many windows under those pointed roofs.

And the Parliament Buildings. Green domes, pale stone, a Canadian flag down the front. There’s a small moon on the left of the photo, too.

Floatplanes by the harbour. They’re in the photos, but I came by ferry.
That day’s outing was the walk near the airport. Victoria was a memory that came along with it.
Now I feel like going back.
One of the places I’d recommend most
Vancouver is honestly one of my favourite places to recommend, anywhere in the world.
I like the climate. The salmon, the oysters—I’ve eaten so much good food there. Then you’ve got that beautiful sea and those mountains, lovely streets, and little shops you want to wander into.
The people I’ve met have been so kind. Sometimes I’m just walking along and someone starts chatting with me. I love that.
I’ve also got stories from North Vancouver and Stanley Park, and from eating a hot dog downtown. Maybe I’ll post those when I feel like it.
🧭 If you’re thinking of going across
Victoria is across the water from Vancouver. Bus and ferry connections are one way to get there; the ferry route I took was Tsawwassen–Swartz Bay.
For current connections, check BC Ferries’ bus and coach information. Check the return trip as well as the outward one before choosing a sailing.
A rough idea of the cost
For a same-day return from Vancouver city to Victoria, budget about C$63 per adult for transport, using public transit and travelling on the ferry without a car. This is a planning example at current fares, not what I paid on my earlier trip.
- Ferry, Tsawwassen–Swartz Bay: C$44.10 return (C$21 each way plus the current 5% fuel surcharge, standard fare).
- Vancouver-side transit: C$12.55 for a TransLink all-zone DayPass.
- Victoria-side buses: C$6 for a BC Transit DayPASS.
Total: C$62.65. Food, accommodation and travel to Canada are extra. Starting at YVR airport can add C$6.50, depending on your ticket. These are separate tickets; this is not a through-coach fare.
Checked 28 September 2026. Prices can change. Sources: BC Ferries fare table, TransLink, Victoria buses.
If you’ve got a favourite place to walk in Victoria, tell me. I’d like something to keep in mind for next time.
